Karen Fay "Grandma" Nellis, the twin daughter of Cecil and Ruth (Stoner) Waggoner was born January 29, 1943, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Spencer, Iowa, where she received her early education.
On November 15, 1958, Karen married Earl Nellis in Spencer. Following their marriage, they continued living in Spencer before moving to Hartley, Iowa, in 1969. Over the years, she worked at Heartland Beef in Spencer, and the Hartley Packing Plant for several years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hartley. Karen and Earl loved riding their motorcycle throughout the western United States and traveling to Sturgis, South Dakota, for many years. She also enjoyed bingo in various communities.
Karen passed away at the Primghar Rehab Care Center in Primghar, Iowa, on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at the age of 73. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl in 2001; and daughter, Cinda Gathman.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Greg (Ella) Nellis of Virginia Beach, VA, Crystal (Dennis) Albrant of Hartley, IA; son-in-law, Steven Gathman of Pierce, NE; 8 grandchildren: Joshua & Melissa Gathman, Meagan & DeJah Nellis, Deedra & Madison Albrant, Jessica (Anthony) Hasbrouck and Melissa Albrant; 10 great-grandchildren; twin sister, Judy (Larry) Ortman of Pine Bluff, AR, sister, Sharon (Mike) Goodwin of Phoenix, AZ and brother, Jim (Jan) Waggoner of Hartley, IA; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will take place 10:00 A.M., Saturday, June 18, at the United Methodist Church in Hartley.
