She received her early education at a country school near Hartley and later graduated from Hartley High School in 1956. After her schooling, she worked as a secretary for Wilbur Sackett Law Office for one year. Kay married Russell Holst on October 20, 1957 in Hartley. After their marriage, they farmed north of Everly for a few years until Russell was called to serve in the military. While serving his county they were stationed in Salinas, CA and later Tacoma, WA. They returned to farm east of May City for 11 years and later moved to a farm west of May City, where they were partners in farming for 24 years. After their retirement, they moved to the town of May City, where they have continued to live. After her children were raised, she worked for a nursing home in Hartley as a cook, until she was forced into retirement due to her failing health.
