Her childhood was spent in the town she was raised, Spencer, IA. Her love of school and athletics was her inspiration to pursue a teaching degree at the University of Minnesota, Mankato where she received a bachelor's degree in education in 2006. She began her career teaching 5th grade in Jackson, MN in 2007. She was active in several extracurricular committees as well as coaching volleyball and softball. Katie then found employment with Dixon Unified School District at CA Jacob's Middle School as a math teacher. She blossomed and flourished in her role at CA Jacob's going beyond the role of teacher by participating in STEM, Site Leadership Team, Math Department Chair, Sunshine Site Committee, No-Bully Solution Coach Leader, and the leader of the Chamber of Commerce Business and Education Alliance. Katie had an infectious personality and smile that commanded the attention of any room she entered. She enjoyed travel, entertaining her friends and family in her home, wine, shoes, selfies, sunglasses, losing sunglasses, and unorthodox hair styles. She will be missed by her faithful companion and jogging partner Kirby, Mark and Katie's black lab. She is preceded in death by her two grandfathers Harvey Hilbrands and David Grave.
