Melvin Keith Tesch, Jr., son of Melvin Karl and Dorothy (Dobbertin/Haht) Tesch, was born March 27, 1950 on the family farm northwest of Paullina, Iowa, where he spent his childhood. After confirmation in Germantown, Iowa and graduation from Paullina High School in 1968 he spent time in Estherville, Iowa where he met his future wife before settling in Spencer, Iowa.
Keith and Macrina Jean Currans wed April 20, 1974. They lived for a short time near Everly, Iowa before moving to Spencer to establish their permanent home. They welcomed their only child, Nathan, on January 26, 1978. In 1981 Keith joined the Iowa Department of Transportation road maintenance division, where he worked until his retirement in 2008. Retirement simply meant he shifted his focus and work ethic to construction projects around the Spencer area.
He was best defined by his passion for service to others through volunteering. Keith was with Spencer Fire Department 31 years; joining in September, 1982 and serving until the end. Along the way he also served in the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) leadership advocating for employee rights, as Cub Scout leader, Little League baseball coach, Little League board of directors, local politics, and countless instances of helping his friends and neighbors when he was needed.
Keith passed away at the Spencer Hospital on June 30, 2013 at the age of 63. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy; half-sister Charlene Haht-Way; and half-brother Donnie Haht.
Continuing to cherish his memory are his wife Macrina of Spencer, Iowa; his son Nathan Tesch and his wife Marla of Rosemount, Minnesota; father Melvin of Paulina Iowa; siblings Glenda Parry and her husband Robert of Vail, Arizona; Denise Edgar of Waverly, Iowa; Kevin Tesch and his wife Lisa of Lake George, Colorado; Terry Tesch and his wife Terri Lynn of Germantown, Iowa; granddaughter Anya; and 20 nieces and nephews all of whom he treasured dearly.
