Kenneth Frank Versluis, the son of Kenneth and Audrey (Miller) Versluis, was born July 28, 1952 in Worthington, MN. Kenny's mother later married Richard Nuehse in 1957 and together they raised Kenny and his two sisters, Sue and Lori in Round Lake, MN. Some of his favorite things as a young boy were hunting and fishing and he loved bringing home fresh killed squirrels or rabbits. His mother would cook whatever Kenny brought home and that was dinner for the family.
Kenny met Linda Schroeder from Worthington, MN and they later married and born to them was their only son, Kelly Frank Versluis. Ken and family then moved to Fairfield, Montana, where he erected elevators. Later they moved to Sioux Falls, SD where he was a maintenance technician. Kenny moved his family and they became residents of Spencer, Iowa, where he worked for Spencer Foods in their maintenance department from 1977 to 1984. His final occupation was a machinist for Skyjack and General Machine, where he worked until his retirement. He was a 'Ken' of all trades.
He was blessed with four granddaughters, Kylee & Kelsey and Hayley & Abigail, which he inherited but treated no different. They always made him smile or shake his head. One of his last big projects was building a rabbit cage with Kelsey. He always looked forward to their next Goodwill trip or garage sale anticipating what that best deal of the day would be.
Kenny met a lot of people over the years making some great friendships that he treasured. Some of his favorite things throughout life were taking Kelly on wild trips or 'fishing' excursions most kids only see on T.V. He loved spending time with his family, hunting with his Irish setters, fishing for trout. After a couple of beers, Kenny thought he was the 'trout king'. Those trips always involved mass quantities of beer, fishing stories that were a bit far stretched and lots of laughs with whoever was along for the ride. He also enjoyed the company of friends, playing games like foosball, always looking for a new distraction so he could win but usually left losing a couple bucks. He loved the casino and just like foosball he usually left a couple bucks lighter thinking how he could go back and win the jackpot next time. Kenny also loved music and going to concerts.
He was definitely a well-rounded man that had an unusual sense of humor and a heart of gold and always seemed to brighten somebody's day with his witty remarks and positive attitude. He was always young at heart, but grew up over the years realizing that there was more to life and he had a lot to be grateful for despite the tough luck and curveballs life can throw at you. Just weeks before his passing, Kenny said 'No matter what happens in 2017, I feel accomplished with no regrets'. On Christmas Day, we were sitting around opening gifts and Kenny was very emotional and quiet (weird). We noticed he had tears in his eyes and when asked what was up by one of his grandkids, he replied 'just sitting back enjoying seeing everyone together and grateful to be a part of it, I'm happy'. On Christmas cards from Kenny this year he wrote, 'Remember Kelly you are my world and I couldn't be more proud and you gave me the most awesome granddaughters any grandpa could wish for. I am a lucky man.' He never knew what he was walking into when he came to the house, there was never a dull moment.
In addition to his son, Kelly Versluis (Wendy) of Spencer and his grandchildren: Kylee & Kelsey Versluis and Hayley & Abby Byerly. He is also survived by two sisters: Susan (Bruce) Kruger and their children: Scott (Lori) Kruger of Belle Plaine, MN along with his great nieces and nephews: Taylor, Morgan and Jackson, Sarah (Jeff) Smith of Bentonville, AR along with his great nieces & nephews, Logan and Sydney and Sean (Jillian) Kruger of Minneapolis, MN along with his grandnieces: Ruby and Kai; his other sister, Lori (Curt) Glawe of Aurelia, IA and their children: Jordan, Meghan, Marissa and Austin; other relatives and many friends.
'Just remember, life is too short to not be happy!'
