Kenneth Ingman Hoyne, the son of Kenneth and Ellen (Siebert) Hoyne, was born July 17, 1920 in Hurley, SD. His childhood years were spent in Chicago, and later Kadoka, SD, until moving to Centerville, SD, where he received his education, graduating from Centerville High School in 1938. Following high school, he attended SDSU in Brookings, SD, for one year, Sioux Falls College for 2 years and received his BA degree from Dakota Wesleyan College in 1942. In July of 1942, he was drafted into the U. S. Army where he served with the mechanized calvary. He played with the Army band for 9 months in Panama and later assigned to Paris, TX for 9 months. Kenneth was later transferred to Europe and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge where he was injured and spent time in a hospital for 4 months. Following his hospitalization, he was sent back to Europe and worked as a radio operator while attending the University of Biarritz in southwest France. Upon his discharge in 1945, he returned to the United States and attended the University of Iowa where he finished his Master's Degree and teaching degree.
Kenneth married Opal Williamson on August 14, 1949, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, IA. During his teaching career, he taught music in Peterson for one year, Royal for 6 years and eventually moved to Sutherland, IA, where he taught instrumental music for 29 years until his retirement in 1984. Ken was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sutherland. He enjoyed singing with 'The Four Nubbins' barbershop quartet for 6 years. He was past president of the Iowa and N.W. Iowa Bandmasters Associations, a member of the American School Band Directors Association, a charter member of the Ruritan and member of American Legion Post #152 in Sutherland. His family was the most important part of his life.
Ken passed away at the Baum-Harmon Hospital in Primghar, IA, on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Opal in 2010; and one sister, Maridell Mark.
Left to cherish his memory are two sons: Kenneth and wife, Wendy of Sioux Falls, SD, and Roger and wife, Sheri of Olympia, WA; five grandchildren: Dalton (Lisa), Dustin, Allison (Brandon), Ellen and Lauren; one sister, Dorthea Dailey of Sioux Falls, SD; one great-granddaughter; his special friends, Mark and Jeannie Bogenrief of Sutherland; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Memorial services will be held 1:30 P.M., Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at the United Methodist Church in Sutherland.
A military flag presentation will be conducted by American Legion Post #152 of Sutherland, Iowa at the church following the services.
The Taps will be played by Pete Hittle at the church.
