Kristin Marie Peterson

Kristin Marie Jacobs Peterson, 67, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2017, at her home following a short illness. A private family memorial service will be held Saturday, March 25, 2017, at First Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake. Family and friends are invited to a visitation at the church that afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Kristin Marie Jacobs was born March 14, 1950, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Dr. Carl and Lucille (Huendling) Jacobs. She graduated from Central High School in 1968. She attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1973 with a degree in elementary education. Kris married Jeffry Peterson on August 12, 1972, in Sioux City, Iowa. After their marriage, they lived in Iowa City where she was a second grade teacher in the Iowa City school system. They later moved to Des Moines, Sioux City and finally Spirit Lake, Iowa, where they made their permanent home on West Lake Okoboji. Kris was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother, who devoted her life to caring for those around her. She delighted in her grandchildren, with whom she spent countless hours playing, going on adventures and treasure hunts, reading, and teaching about life and nature. She also spent many days caring for her mother and father during their illnesses. Her family was her life. Kris made friends wherever she went. She was warm, approachable, relatable and fun. Her wonderful sense of humor was infectious. She had a gift for brightening the day of those around her, friends and strangers alike. Kris did not shy away from hard work and was not afraid to take charge of a project. She was the boss. She blessed her family with her cooking, sewing, gardening, decorating, painting, and artistic skills. Kris had a great love for the beauty and simplicity of nature. She had quite a green thumb and an extensive knowledge of trees, insects and birds. Her "nature table" was loved by her grandkids. She rescued many animals over the years, once even resuscitating a hummingbird. She loved living on the lake, swimming, fishing and beach glass hunting with her children and grandchildren. Kris is survived by her husband, Jeff; son, John (Angie) Peterson of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and daughter, Jill (Andrew) Lightfoot of Bettendorf, Iowa; grandchildren: Sydney and Drey Peterson, and Elias and Liam Lightfoot; six siblings: Beth (Curtis) Livengood, Ruth (Robert) Walton, Mary Varner, Peter (Mary) Jacobs, Susan (John) Hemminger, and Rachel (Donald) Holmquist; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her nephew, Matthew Livengood. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established by the family.
