Larene Mae Selk

Larene Mae Selk, the daughter of Emiel and Helena (Urban) Dau, was born on May 20, 1924, in Sutherland, Iowa. She was baptized on January 21, 1925, in Calumet, Iowa. Larene grew up in Sutherland where she received her education and graduating from Sutherland High School in 1941. On November 25, 1943, Larene married Howard Selk in Sutherland at the Methodist parsonage. Following their marriage, they farmed in the Sutherland area for 31 years. Larene was homemaker and enjoyed helping Howard on the farm. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sutherland and was an excellent seamstress, crocheter and avid cross-stitcher. Howard and Larene enjoyed polka music and old-time dancing. They would travel to New Ulm and Worthington, Minesota where they attended the polka festival. They also enjoyed traveling to 10-Mile Lake in Minnesota at least twice a year where they camped and fished. Larene passed away on December 29, 2008 at the Sutherland Care Center at the age of 84. She loved being a resident at the nursing home. She appreciated the staff at the nursing home and the ambulance crew for all their kindnesses. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2003 and her son, Michael who passed away when he was 5. Left to cherish her memory are sisters-in-law: Helen Pluth and her husband, Al of Victorville, CA, Arlene Selk of Aurora, CO and Helen Selk of Sutherland, IA; her nieces: Judi Jackson and Jean Pingel both of Sutherland, IA; several other nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
