Martha Lavon Toelle was born in Havelock, Iowa, on November 11, 1926, to John & Margaret Ralle. When Lavon was 8 years of age, her parents moved to Spencer where she would live for the rest of her life. Lavon attended Spencer Public Schools, including grade school at the North School across the street from her parents' house on West 11th Street, and later graduated from Spencer High School.
Lavon worked a short time after graduating high school, until she married Charles Ray Toelle on March 28, 1946. She and Charles farmed on the family farm southwest of Spencer until their full retirement in 2006.
Among other things, Lavon was active in the Farm Bureau, the Riverton Township Worthwhile Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary, served as Riverton Township Trustee, 4-H support, Spencer Garden Club, Questers and involvement in the Clay County Fair Floriculture projects. She enjoyed antique furniture refinishing, gardening, cooking, canning, walnut hardwood furniture design and creation, sewing, various crafts, and flower arranging.
Lavon enjoyed good health throughout her life, and after a brief illness, Lavon passed away on Saturday morning April 2, 2011, at the age of 84. Lavon was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles, and son, Michael.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Doug Toelle of Houston, TX; daughter, Patricia (Toelle) Lindsey of Leon, IA; grandsons, Zachary Toelle of Bell, FL; Kristopher Lindsey of Leon, IA; granddaughter, Paige (Lindsey) Stearns and her husband Brian Stearns of Spencer, IA; two great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, April 8, 2011, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.
