Lawrence Leon Evans, the son of James and Olive (Smith) Evans, was born on October 20, 1916, in Monroe City, IN. His childhood years were spent in Clay County, where he received his education. After his schooling, he worked as a hired hand until he entered into the military, serving with the U.S. Army from 1941 until his honorable discharge in 1945.
Lawrence married Jean Mills on April 20, 1942 in Greenville, IA. After their marriage, they farmed in Buena Vista and Clay County. Lawrence later succeeded his father with his sanitation business, Evan's Hauling Service, which he owned and operated for 18 years. In 1973, he worked at the Spencer Fire Department as a driver for 9 years until his retirement. They moved to Dickens in 1979, where he volunteered his time with the Dickens Fire Department and kept active gardening and mowing lawns with his John Deere. Lawrence was a "John Deere Man". In his spare time, Lawrence enjoyed fishing, woodworking, rebuilding small engines, traveling with his travel trailer, often wintering in Arizona. Lawrence enjoyed being with all his family as often as possible.
Lawrence passed away on November 24, 2014, at the St. Luke Lutheran Home at the age of 98. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean of 66 years; parents, James and Olive (Chloe) Evans; 4 brothers: Earl, Leland, Cecil and Dale and two sisters: Bessie Martin and Marjorie Stoner and 2 great-great grandchildren: Kylor Igou and Charlee Kathman.
Left to cherish his memory are his 4 daughters: Carol (Roger) Kathman of Spencer, IA, Joyce (Wayne) Smith of Pella, IA, Linda (James) Gunn of St. Louis, MO and Anita (Rodney) Petersen of Hartley, IA; his foster son, Thomas Toiberg (Donna) of Dallas, TX; a special "fifth" daughter, Shirley Kirk of Dallas, TX; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends and his church family.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be 1:00 P.M., Saturday, November 29, at the Faith Pentecostal Church.
Military Services will be conducted by the American Legion - Glen Pedersen Post #1 of Spencer.
