Leland Paul Van Houten

Leland "Lee" Paul Van Houten, died Sunday morning, February 17th, 2013, at the Averra Medical Center, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, after a brief, unexpected attack of spinal meningitis. Lee was born on May 26th, 1940, and was 72 years old. Lee is survived by his daughter, Paula, granddaughters, Jessica and Ashley, great-granddaughters, Mikayla and DaNayjah, great grandsons, Riley and Parker, a sister-in-law, several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, great grandnieces, great grandnephews, and cousins. Lee was especially close to his niece, Terri and her boyfriend Phil, his grandnieces and their spouses, Rachel & Eric, and Brandy & Matt, and great grandnieces, Rhilynn, Allyson, Alyssa & Eva. He spent birthdays & holidays at their homes and took great joy in being part of their lives. Lee is preceded in death by his son, Christopher, parents, grandparents, 3 brothers and a sister. Lee was a cook/chef and worked very hard. Lee continued to work after his retirement and was employed at the Hyvee Kitchen/Deli at the time of his death. He had many co-workers and customers there who were close friends. Lee was a huge Hawkeye football and basketball fan, and there will be a Hawkeye themed graveside service at 2 p.m., June 1st, 2013. Lee was cremated and his ashes will be sprinkled at the foot of his son's grave in Lone Tree cemetery, near Everly, Iowa. There will be a reception after the service at Schaumburg Park, which is just a mile down the road toward Spencer, Iowa.
SERVICES
Graveside memorial services will take place 2:00 P.M., Saturday, June 1, at Lone Tree Cemetery in Everly, IA.
