Leona I Smith, the daughter of Hans and Sara Hanson, was born and raised in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on January 20th, 1929. She married John Lewis Smith on May 21, 1950. They were married for 64 years till John's passing in 2014.
Leona retired from the phone company, Cintell. She also worked for a Spencer tax service in her retirement years. She was a lifetime member of the Lutheran church, who frequently volunteered within the church and her community. She was an avid volleyball player and enjoyed riding her bike, even participating in the annual RAGBRAI tour.
Leona was a fabulous cook, who always enjoyed her time with family and friends. She is a beloved sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, who will always be remembered for her strength, kindness and generosity.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Kenny Hanson.
Left to cherish her memory are two sons: Dennis (Lynn) Smith, and David (Crystal) Smith); her grandson, James (Monika) Smith; her granddaughter, Shelby Smith; her great granddaughter, Annabella Smith; her sisters: Elaine Kaufman, Lavonne Brawley, Betty Punke, and Jeanne (Richard) Janes; her brother, Lloyd Hanson; and many dear relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Great Lakes Lutheran School in Spencer.
