Leonard Alfred Anderson, the son of H.P. Alfred and Ida Esther (Rasmussen) Anderson, was born November 21, 1920 in rural Royal, Iowa. His childhood years were spent on a farm near Royal, where he received his education, graduating from Royal High School in 1938.
Leonard married Elsie (Gordey) on August 19, 1950 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Following their marriage, they farmed near Royal for their entire married life. He was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal, serving on the church council and the tape ministry. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and amateur radio operating. He was a member of the Odd Fellows for many years. Leonard had a distinct love for flying and obtained a commercial pilot license and bought his own plane in 1946.
Leonard passed away at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD on Friday, August 14, 2009 at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Robert Van Ampting; a grandson, Marcus Van Ampting and a sister, Leona Anderson.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Elsie of Royal; three daughters: Valorie Van Ampting, Laurie and her husband, Don Conlon and Mary Ann and her husband, Gordon Quail all of Spencer; five grandchildren; one great grandddaughter his siblings: Francis and his wife, Nellie Anderson of Royal, Luella Lindt of Kingman, KS, Viola Hagedorn of Spirit Lake, IA, Howard Anderson of Hamilton, Ohio and Darlene O'Sullivan of Spencer, IA; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal, Iowa.
