Leonard Carrol Amendt

August 21, 1930 — January 7, 2016

Leonard Carrol Amendt, the son of Alfred and Minnie (Kracht) Amendt, was born August 21, 1930, in Sutherland, Iowa. He was baptized at home and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland. His childhood years were spent on a farm near Sutherland, where he received his education, graduating from Sutherland High School in 1948. After his schooling, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army from 1951 until his honorable discharge in October of 1953. During his service, he trained as an MOS for the 4.2 mortar and served in the Korean Conflict as a supervisor of P.O.W.'s. Leonard married Maurine Townley on February 6, 1955, at the Wesley Methodist Church in Sioux City, Iowa. Following their marriage, they farmed and raised sheep and cattle near Sutherland for several years. He was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland. He was past member of the Ruritan Club in Sutherland. They moved into town in 1993. He passed away at the Sutherland Care Center on Thursday, January 7, 2016, at the age of 85. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Everett (Irene) Amendt and Marvin (Rosali) Amendt; inlaws: Gus Jalas, Verne Townley, Harold Strunk, Kent Townley and Bryce Townley. Leonard is survived by his wife, Maurine of Sutherland; his children: Dale Amendt of Sutherland, Dr. Bruce (Janna) Amendt of Urbandale, IA, Larie (Matthew) Evans of Plano, TX, and Trent (Lola) Amendt of Shakopee, MN; six grandchildren: Jennifer (Joe) Eickman of Wichita, KS, Kathryn Amendt of New Braunfels, TX, Daphne Evans of Newton, KS, Adam Evans of Plano, TX, Aaron and Peter Amendt of Shakopee, MN; one sister, Evelyn Jalas of Sutherland, IA; one brother, Wendell (Sherry) Amendt of Spencer, IA; inlaws: Erma Comstock of Shoreview, MN, Lynn (Delores) Townley of Hinton, IA, Orma Strunk of Sioux City, IA, Joyce (Bob) Belknap of White Bear Lake, MN, Nancy Townley of Milton, FL and Charlene Townley of Leavenworth, WA; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

SERVICES

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 11, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Bethel Lutheran Church.
