Leroy 'Bud' Welle

March 6, 1930 — February 3, 2015

Elvin Leroy "Bud" Welle, the son of Lester and Pearl (Arms) Welle, was born March 6, 1930 in Greenville, IA. He was the oldest of eleven children. Bud moved to rural Milford in the spring of 1943 and graduated from Okoboji Consolidated High School in 1948. While in high school, he participated in basketball and baseball. In the summers he worked for his uncle Glen Welle building roads. Bud married his childhood sweetheart, Bertha "Marie" Knudtson on December 31, 1949. After their marriage, he started farming and continued doing so until his passing. In fact, he already had purchased his seed corn for the 2015 planting season. Bud and Marie were members of Little Sioux Lutheran Church, where he served on the council for many years and was also president. Bud enjoyed farming (combining was his favorite), visiting with friends and neighbors, and going to the Clay County Fair. He loved spending time with family, especially his grandkids. Bud passed away at the Milford Nursing Center in Milford, Iowa on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: John & Mike, and grandson, Bradley Simpson. In addition to his wife of sixty-five years, Marie, Bud leaves three sons: Donald of Denver, CO, Dick (Julie) and Jack (Rebecca) of Milford; 8 grandchildren: Al, Alace, Elizabeth, Kristina, Nicole, Lorna, Matt Fengler, Mark and Jason Simpson; sixteen great grandkids; 1 great great grandson; three sisters: Jeannine Winter of Fostoria, DeAnne (Norman) Van Enter of Spencer & Bonnie Gilbertson of Apache Junction, AZ; five brothers: Jerry (Roseann) of Milford, Dean of Crescent City, FL, Bill (Bonnie) of Spencer and David and Bob Welle both of Milford, IA; two sisters-in-law: Marcia (Mike) Welle of Spirit Lake and Nancy (John) Welle of Fostoria; many nieces and nephews; relatives and friends.
