Lillian Charlene Whalen, the daughter of Fred and Elsie (Jones) Flack, was born April 4, 1932, in Dickens, IA. Her childhood years were spent in the rural Dickens area, where she received her education, graduating from Lake Center High School in 1950.
Lillian married Melvin Whalen on May 14, 1950, in Dickens. After their marriage, they remained in Dickens, where they raised their family and she worked for the U.S. Postal Service as the Dickens Postmaster for 22 years until her retirement in 1993. She was also an active member of the Dickens Methodist Church, serving as Sunday school and MYF teacher for 31 years. Lillian was also a member of the Dickens UMW. She was also active in the Dickens Community Club and the Dickens Cemetery Association. She dearly loved her hometown and served as city treasurer for 22 years. Lillian was chairperson of the Dickens Centennial and her and Melvin served as Grand Marshall’s of the quasquicentennial. Lillian enjoyed gardening, sewing, family vacations, collecting antiques, fishing and cooking for her family.
She passed away at her home in Dickens on Monday, December 13, 2021, at the age of 89. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Frank Flack and a sister, Betty Bang.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 71 years, Melvin of Dickens; her children: Nancy (Steve) Louthan of Hudson, IA, Sandy Whalen of Cody, WY, Randy (Lois) Whalen of Dickens, IA and Molly Sonius of Royal, IA; 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; her siblings: Arlene Hargrave of Dickens, IA, Roscoe (Judy) Flack of Dundee, MI, Marie Hyde of Albuquerque, NM, Francis Mortenson of Dickens, IA and Linda (Lyle) Kenobbie of Greenville, IA; a sister-in-law, Mary Flack of Englewood, CO; other relatives and friends.
