Linda Karen Swanson

June 12, 1946 — December 30, 2016

Linda Karen Swanson, the daughter of Hollis and Lois (Hagedorn) Koenig was born June 12, 1946 in Spencer, IA. Her childhood years were spent on a farm near Royal, IA, where she graduated from Royal High School in 1964. Linda married the love of her life, Allen Swanson, on January 16, 1966 (Super Bowl I) at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal, IA. In the early years of their marriage she baked wedding cakes, farmed with her husband and raised their children. As a family they enjoyed tractor pulling, showing cattle, church activities and community events. Linda's greatest joy by far was her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her life's work was teaching children about Jesus as she wrote Christmas programs, directed cherub choir for 43 years, and taught at Kings Kamp. Her love of children carried over to her leading the Clay Raiders 4-H Club for many years. She worked at the Iowa State University Extension Office where she became deeply involved in the livestock shows at the Clay County Fair. For the last 9 years she served with passion as a Clay County Supervisor. Linda may be best known for her generous hospitality and welcoming spirit. There were no strangers at her table or her camper. She enjoyed a good prank and a hearty laugh. Linda's scalloped potatoes were requested by many. Her presence at that table will be greatly missed. Linda passed away on Friday, December 30, at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 70. She was preceded in death by her parents. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Allen of Peterson, IA; 2 children, Chris (Lisa) Swanson of Peterson, IA and Pam (Tom) Hanson of Linn Grove, IA; 7 grandchildren, Brandon (Briana) Swanson, Allie (Tyler) Peterson, Collin Swanson, Kal Swanson, Austin (Katlyn) Hanson, Cassidy Hanson, and Jake Hanson; 2 great-grandchildren, Lennon Peterson and Kyeson Hanson; 2 sisters, Maxine (Jim) Flim of Winona, MN and Susan (Lynn) Kruse of Bradenton, FL; 3 nieces; 1 nephew; special family friend Richie Thiesen; other relatives and many friends. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Linda's name. The family would like to invite those not able to attend the funeral service to join them at the Clay County Regional Events Center in Spencer for a time of lunch and fellowship.
