Lois Koenig, the daughter of Peter and Myrtle (Johnson) Hagedorn, was born September 12, 1921 on a farm northwest of Royal, IA. Her childhood years were spent on a farm near Royal, where she received her education, graduating from Royal High School in 1937 at the age of 16. She worked at Jespersen Store in Royal for 2 years, until she was old enough to go to college. She attended Iowa Teacher's College and graduated in 1939. While living in Royal, she was an active member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where she was active in her Circle and taught Sunday school for many years. Following their retirement, they moved in to Royal. Lois was a good mother with a strong faith who knew her Bible well and was able to influence many young people in her 28 years of teaching Sunday school.

Jesus, tender Shepherd, hear us;
Bless your little lambs tonight;
Through the darkness be Thou near us;
Keep us safe till morning light.
All this day Thy hand has led us,
And we thank Thee for Thy care;
Thou hast clothed and warmed and fed us,
Listen to our evening prayer.
May our sins be all forgiven;
Bless the friends we love so well;
Take us, Lord, at last to Heaven,
Happy there with Thee to dwell.
Amen
Lois taught this prayer to her girls and it is
very dear to their hearts.
