Lois Merchant was born June 2, 1937 in Omaha, Nebraska to Lawrence and Mildred (Donahoo) Sandy. She grew up on a farm near Gretna, NE, graduating from Gretna High School in 1954. After graduation, she attended Wayne State Teacher's College, where she earned her elementary teaching certificate.
While in college, she met and married Frank Merchant on December 29, 1956. After their marriage, they moved to Cedar Falls, IA where she taught 3rd grade in Waterloo. After Frank's graduation, they moved to Greenfield, IA, where they both taught school. In 1960, they moved to Rochester, MN and in 1962, they moved to Freeport, IL. They moved to Spencer in 1965, where they made their home for the next 37 years before moving to Spirit Lake. In 2013, they returned to Spencer.
Lois loved to read and work in her flower gardens. She enjoyed taking walks and bird watching. She and Frank spent many winters in Arizona, enjoying the warm sun. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and attending their activities.
Lois passed away at the Spencer Hospital on April 29, 2014 at the age of 76. She is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Jerry Sandy; her son, Jerry Merchant; brother-in-laws: Dr. Walt Reiss & Bud Parks and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lee & Margaret Santage.
She is survived by her husband, Frank of Spencer; her sons: Mark and Scott (Angela) Merchant of Spencer; her grandchildren: Dani (Joe), Kara, April, Kirsten, Jackson, Kinley, Jerra and Brynn; great grandchild, Hunter; sisters: Carol Reiss and Jan (Joe) Bishop; sister-in-law, Lila Parks; daughter-in-law, Michelle Allen; many nieces and nephews.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Monday, May 5, at First Congregational Church in Spencer.
