Loral Francis Mitchell, the son of Ernest "Ernie" Francis Mitchell and Cora Mae (Zubler) Mitchell, was born August 26, 1942 near Curlew, Iowa. He was raised in the Webb area, where he attended school until the 10th grade.
Loral married Jennifer Davis on March 23, 1968, at the Church of Christ in Mapleton, Iowa. Often called "Mitch" by customers, co-workers and friends, Loral would often be found near a grill, stove or oven. Early on, he baked at Bishop's Caf in Sioux City and had other stops at Mickle's restaurant in Harlan and Spelman's restaurant in Cherokee.
Upon moving to Spencer, Loral worked many years for Stub Johnson, including time at the House of Plenty on Grand Avenue and the Ranch Kitchen on Highway 71.
He spent nearly three decades working at Eaton Corp., but always took time off each September to work at Stub's Tasty Foods building (now operated by the Hy-Noon Kiwanis) during the Clay County Fair. There, he had annual requests for his gravy, chili and vegetable soup. He frequently prepared the Christmas meal at Eaton's. If a co-worker fell on hard times, Loral would bring out the large pots to help with the benefit meal. After retiring from Eaton Corp., he also prepared food at Hy-Vee and Northshire-Longhouse.
Loral's interest in planting and agriculture began on the family farm and he liked to maintain a modest flower garden at his home in Spencer. But most of all, Loral loved his family. He would often be seen loading up a vehicle to take Jennifer and their companion, Wags, to the West Coast to visit their daughter, Regina and her family. Loral and Jennifer also used a camper for time together closer to home. He had a strong faith in God, an interest in Native American culture and is looking over us from what he called "the Happy Hunting Grounds."
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and one sister-in-law, Jeanie in 2006.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 42 years, Jennifer; two sons, Rick (Nancy) Mitchell of Sioux City, Iowa, Russell Mitchell of Spencer, Iowa, one daughter, Regina Mitchell of Newport, Ore., one granddaughter, Cora Mitchell, five grandsons, Matthew Mitchell, Casey Mitchell, Keegan Mitchell, Christopher Rambow and Loral's newest grandson, Cash Rambow, who arrived a day after his passing. Loral is also survived by four brothers, Russell (Janet) Mitchell of Omaha, Neb., Clinton (Rita) Mitchell of Omaha, Neb., Delbert Mitchell of Logan, Iowa, Steven Mitchell of Lakewood, Colo., one sister, Joy Carpenter of Kokomo, Ind., and other relatives and many friends.
