Lorelei Scholten Meeter of Spencer, IA, passed away on Friday, December 20th, 2024 after a long battle with lung cancer.
Lorelei was born on December 5th, 1959 to John and Berendena (Brinks) Scholten in Slaton, MN. At age 3, her family moved to Hull, IA, and at age 14 they moved to an acreage near Boyden, IA, where she lived until she graduated high school.
Upon high school graduation from Western Christian in 1978, she went on to Dordt College in Sioux Center, IA, graduating with a degree in Business Administration.
Lorelei was united in marriage to her college sweetheart Greg Meeter on August 23rd, 1980 at Dordt College. Their marriage was blessed with one child, Eric Meeter in 1988. Eric and his wife Kristen have a 21-month-old daughter, Elliotte, who was the joy of Lorelei’s life since the moment she was born.
Upon college graduation, Lorelei started her first job at Westmar College in Lemars, IA, converting their record system from the Dewey Decimal system to Library of Congress system. She and Greg then moved to South Holland, IL, where she worked at a large auto dealership preparing the paperwork for car sales and regaling the gullible salesman about how things were back in Iowa. (She had them convinced she was in an arranged marriage.) Lorelei will forever be remembered for her love of humor and her infectious laugh. She never missed an opportunity to crack a joke.
In December of 1985, Lorelei and Greg moved to Spencer. Lorelei worked at Books N Things as their bookkeeper until Eric was born.
While Eric was growing up, she worked as the manager of the Costume Shop at the Spencer Community Theater, a seamstress at Charles A Brown, and a barista at Hava Java. In Eric’s early high school years, she opened a consignment store, Kozy Kottage, in downtown Spencer until she closed it in 2004 to be more involved in Eric’s activities. She was very involved with the launch of Many Hands Market, volunteering many hours before it opened. She continued to work there until her kidney cancer stopped her in 2015.
Lorelei was an incredibly skilled seamstress and sewed for many people out of her home. Hundreds of prom and wedding dresses went through her home over the years. She was particularly passionate about crafting costumes and dressing Eric up in her creations, everything from a knight riding a horse to a full-scale tiger. She also had the honor of handcrafting daughter-in-law Kristen’s wedding dress in 2015 without the use of a single pattern.
Lorelei was an active member at Hope Church in Spencer, IA, and loved serving in the music, youth, and food ministries. She served as Choir Director for several years. When she was pregnant with Eric, she would get so much joy showing off his kicks to the choir during rehearsal. She served as a youth sponsor with Greg, impacting the lives of many teenagers. When Eric was in middle school and high school, she assisted with the vocal music programs. Later, she also used her musical talents to bless nursing home residents alongside Ray Meyer. She was the point person for the Community Meals for many years at Hope Church and loved serving the crowds every few weeks. She was instrumental in developing the HyNoon Kiwanis hot beef sundaes, using her culinary talents to perfect the recipe for the beef.
Though her various cancer battles placed limitations on her, she was an adventurer at heart and loved to travel. Even more than travel, she loved spending time with family and cherished every opportunity she had to host or attend a gathering.
She leaves to cherish her memories her husband Greg of 44 years; one son Eric, daughter-in-law Kristen, and granddaughter Elliotte; 3 siblings and their spouses: Myron (Connie) Scholten of Plano, TX; Elaine (Ross) Mastbergen of Paullina, IA; Mark (Shirlee) Scholten of DeMotte, IN; 3 nieces and their families: Tiffany (Scott) Zeilenga of Sheldon, IA; Ashley (Shalom) Nwaokolo of Sheldon, IA; Kelsey (Matt) Kruse of Lennox, SD; and a host of other dear family and friends.
Lorelei is preceded in death by her father John and her mother Berendena.
Following the graveside services you are invited to the luncheon which will be held back at the church.
