Loren Davis Sullivan, the son of Selim and Etta Irene (Davis) Sullivan, was born March 4, 1929 in Cherokee, Iowa. His early years were spent on a farm southeast of Sutherland, known as the McCulla Farm. He attended a country school until the 3rd grade when the family moved to a farm southwest of Peterson, IA. He graduated from Peterson Consolidated School in 1947.
Loren was involved in the trucking business in Peterson, IA and Tulsa, OK until he entered the military in 1951. He received his 16 weeks infantry basic training at Schofield Barrack in Hawaii. After basic training, he attended Gun Mechanics School on the small island of Eta Jima, Japan for two months and then was shipped to Korea. Loren was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze (Battle Stars), Army Occupation (Japan) and the United Nations Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in Colorado Springs, CO on May 9, 1953.
He married Betty Jean Arndt on September 27, 1953. They were blessed with three children: Laureen Andersen, Lynn Gannon and David Sullivan. They made their home in Spencer, where he went to work for Nielsen Tire Company for two years. Loren went into the trucking business, hauling grain to Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. In 1960, he worked for Noel Ready Mix, driving a mixer and later managed the business until 1970. In 1970, they moved to Missouri where they owned and operated a drive inn. They later moved to Texas to manage a ready mix until returning to Spencer. Loren retired from the United Parcel Service in 1989, where he drove tractor-trailers to Omaha, Des Moines, Sioux Falls and Minneapolis.
Loren passed away at the Spencer Hospital on December 29, 2012 at the age of 83. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Betty of Spencer; two daughters: Laureen Andersen and her husband, Roger of Spencer, IA and Lynn Gannon and her husband, Dick of Denver, CO; a son, David Sullivan of Des Moines, IA; his grandchildren: Emily Andersen, Sam Gannon, Jake Sullivan and Kayla Sullivan; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer.
There will be a Military Service conducted by the American Legion Glen Pedersen Post #1.
