Loren Wilmer Reed

Loren Wilmer Reed, son of C.B. and Dagmar (Heick) Reed was born January 22, 1919 on a farm in Clay County north of Peterson, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in the Peterson area where he graduated from Peterson High School in 1937. He attended Iowa State University. He married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Zwick, on June 12, 1940 in Hawarden, Iowa. Loren farmed north of Peterson for over 22 years. Loren became an underwriter for Grinnell Reinsurance Company and, after three years in that capacity, purchased the John Scott Insurance Agency in Peterson (which became Reed Insurance Agency) leading Loren and Dorothy to move into Peterson in 1962. In 1977 Loren became the manager for Clay Mutual Insurance Company in Spencer, and they moved to Spencer. Loren was a member of the Methodist churches in Peterson and Spencer. He was also a member of Golden K Kiwanis, Lions Club and served on the Board of Trustees for Clay County and the Clay County Zoning Board for 20 years. When Loren and Dorothy moved to Spencer in 1977, they gained an extended family in their next-door neighbors, Dave and Connie Severson and their children Deb and Mike. Granddaughters, Chylynn and Sheena Carlisle, brought much happiness to Loren and Dorothy. Sheena and her husband Billy Thomas presented Loren with a great-grandson, Ryder in 2014 who brought him much joy. Loren passed away on Tuesday, September 30, at Northshire Nursing Home in Spencer at the age of 95. He was preceded in death by Dorothy, his beloved wife of 71 years, parents C.B. and Dagmar Reed, and his brother Byron Reed. Left to cherish Loren's memory are son Joel and his wife Diane of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter Susan Carlisle and husband David of Sioux Falls, SD; granddaughters Chylynn Carlisle of Sioux Falls and Sheena Thomas, husband Billy and their son Ryder of Sioux Falls; brother Rex Reed of Kiowah Island, South Carolina; numerous extended family members and a host of friends.
