Lorraine Mary Kenney, the daughter of Leo and Florence (Peiffer) Hammen, was born August 21, 1926 in Jolley, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in the Varina area, where she received early education at St. Columbkille Catholic School in Varina, graduating in 1944. She continued her education at Commercial Business Extension College in Omaha, NE for one year and then returned to Storm Lake, Iowa in 1946, where she worked as a secretary for Vilas and Company.
Lorraine married J.W. “Pat” Kenney at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Varina, Iowa on June 15, 1948. When they moved to Estherville, Iowa, she worked as a secretary for Fitzgibbon Law Office and then at KILR Radio Station as the office secretary along with preparing the daily log. Later they moved to Spencer, where she was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer, she was involved as Circle Chairperson of the Funeral Committee and volunteered on Birthright, caring for the Church linens, parking cars for the Clay County Fair and the prayer chain. Lorraine and Pat thoroughly enjoyed their family spending their 50th wedding anniversary with their children on the Enchantment of the Seas Royal Caribbean Cruise and their 60th wedding anniversary at Lake Okoboji surrounded by friends and family. Lorraine loved all card clubs she belonged to where she met many of her dearest friends. She most recently had resided in Keelson Harbour Assisted Living in Spirit Lake for the last year.
She passed away at the Accura Health Center in Spirit Lake, Iowa on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at the age of 92. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Pat in 2011.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Patricia, Dick Kenney, Terri and her husband, Bruce Cunningham, MaryKay Lux and her fiancé, Gary Toft and Melissa Kenney; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; three sisters: Darlene Simcik of Pittsburg, PA, IlaMae Kraus of Pocahontas, IA and Mary Rose Lenz-Brown and her husband, L.D of Early, IA; one brother, Art Hammen and his wife, Betty of Fonda, IA; many other relatives and friends.
