Following her schooling, Lucille taught in Benton County country schools for four years.
Lucille's father died in the influenza epidemic of 1918. Following the remarriage of her mother to John F.T. Dahnke in 1930, she moved to Hartley, Iowa, with her mother and step-father, and continued teaching in O'Brien County schools for three years.

Dodge for one year following their marriage, then moved to Muscatine which remained their permanent home for sixteen years. She lived her life exclusively in the State of Iowa with the exception of the five years that her husband was in the military service during WWII, when they resided in several places in the U.S. For over two years she lived with her sister in Des Moines while her husband was on active overseas military duty. In 1951, the family moved to Spencer, Iowa, where they resided until 1970. Later they moved to Okoboji, where they lived for 21 years, until returning to Spencer in 1991 to take residence in The Highlands. In her later years, she was a resident of Riverview Terrace Assisted Living and St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer. Lucille was a member of the Methodist Church for her entire lifetime, participating in Women's Society activities and teaching Sunday school.
