Lucille Harriet (Adams) Rusk was born April 12, 1922, on the family farm outside of Rossie, Iowa. The fifth of eight children to William Russell and Jo Hannah (Siefken) Adams, Lucy attended the Rossie Consolidated School and graduated in 1941.
Lucy married Clayton James Rusk on February 23, 1944, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Following their marriage they settled on the farm near Dickens, Iowa, where they lived, raised their family, and farmed the rest of their lives.
As a young girl, Lucy was often seen running ahead of her siblings to the school bus; she wasn't trying to be the first, but just did not want to keep anyone waiting. She was very athletic and enjoyed music, including singing and playing the trumpet. For many years, Lucy and Clayton hosted large family gatherings on the farm for the Fourth of July and other holidays. Lucy was an active member of the Dickens United Methodist Church. She was very giving, always helping others and providing food to those working in the fields. Lucy was famous for her beautiful paintings, love of animals, playing cards, and making Special K bars and other homemade treats. She was also well known for her sassy spirit, love of red cars, and sense of humor. Most of all, she loved and was very proud of her family.
Lucy passed away on Monday, November 28, 2016, at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, all seven siblings, and five of their spouses: Helen and Dave Mills, Tom and Eva Adams, Harry Adams, Marion and Kenneth King, Marge and Howard Thomsen, Pete Adams, and Bill and Sally Jo Baldwin; and son-in-law, Bruce Merrill.
Lucy is survived by her three children and daughters-in-law, Bob and Nira Rusk of Dickens, Jim and Jan Rusk of Greenville, Iowa, and Jo Merrill of Greenville; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Naomi Adams of Wahpeton, Iowa and Madeline Adams of Spencer, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.
