Lucy Mae Kosta, the daughter of Louis Arnold and Nellie Madge (Woolston) Batcheler, was born October 19, 1914 on the family's farm home North of Peterson, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent on the farm. She started school in a one-room schoolhouse, Willow Grove #9, which was located on the corner of the family farm. Then completing school & graduating from High School in Sutherland, Iowa in 1931.
Lucy married Ted Kosta on September 23, 1933 in Spencer, Iowa at the Clay County Fair. The country was deep in the Depression and the Clay County Fair Board did this as a promotion with all her wedding attire furnished by Spencer merchants. Her wedding dress has been donated to the Parker Historical Society in Spencer and is often on display at the Clay County Fair.
Following their marriage, they owned Kosta Friendly Grocery Store in Spencer on Grand Ave. for seven years. They sold the store and moved to California where Lucy worked as a checker in the Shopping Bag Grocery Store. Lucy had two daughters born while living in Whittier, California.
They moved back to Peterson where they began farming the family farm. Ted & Lucy farmed for 27 years North of Peterson. When they retired from the farm, they moved into
Everly. Then in 1999, they moved to Spencer, where Lucy resided until the time of her death. Lucy was a member of the United Methodist Church in Everly. She was active in the Meals on Wheels Program for the Senior Citizen's of Everly. Lucy was a stay-at-home Mom while living on the farm. She also was Ted's extra farm hand as she helped with all the fieldwork.
Lucy passed away at St. Lukes Lutheran Home in Spencer on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Nettie, three sisters: Edie, Lila and Jennie; one brother, Ray and her husband of 74 years, Ted.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters and their husbands: Mary Jo and Tom Hegel of Peterson, Iowa and Pat and Mark Van Horn of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three grandchildren: Roxanne White and her husband, Chuck, Ron Hegel and his special friend, Jan Dehrkoop and Damon Zinn; four great grandchildren: Amanda Madson, Nick Madson, Chris Hegel and Jonnie Hegel; nephew, John Berthusen of Avoca, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Everly, Iowa.
