Lyle LeRoy Shinkle, the son of John L. and Mavis Clark Shinkle, was born June 7, 1913 on a farm 6 � miles south of Hartley, Iowa. His childhood years were spent near Hartley, where he received his education, graduating from Hartley High School in 1931. He went into the insurance business shortly after his graduation.
Lyle married Ruth Staines on March 21, 1937 at the farm home of Dora and Ray Staines. They continued to live in Hartley, where they raised their family. For 40 years, Lyle owned his own insurance and real estate business, until his retirement in 1969. He also served as City Clerk for the City of Hartley for 30 years. Lyle was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Hartley, where was involved with the Methodist Men and served on several church boards. He was a member of the Strato Flying Club and at one time was the manager of the Hartley Airport. He was also active in the Hartley community, and was a charter member of the Hartley Industrial Commission, developed lots in N.E. Hartley, where seven new homes and an apartment house were later built. He was also a zoning officer, president of Meals on Wheels for many years and gave much time and effort to this cause. Since his retirement in 1969, he has raised Christmas trees as a hobby, enjoying the out of doors and contact with his many customers. He discontinued this business in 1995. Lyle was a nature lover and always had bird feeders in the back yard. He enjoyed traveling to Europe and Alaska and since 1983, spent winters in Florida. His motto for living was "Give to the world the best that you have, and the best will come back to you" and also "Help somebody today".
Lyle passed away at the Hope Hospice House in Cape Coral, FL on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at the age of 95. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth; 2 sisters: Eileen Lombard and Ardis Ling and two brothers: Don and Thane Shinkle.
Left to cherish his memory are his two sons: Dan and his wife, Janet Shinkle of Milford, IA and Roger and his wife, Roxanne Shinkle of Grapevine, TX; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; a sister, Reva Riley of Venice, CA; a sister-in-law, Sandra Shinkle of Grants Pass, OR; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Thursday, January 22, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Hartley.
