Margaret May (Bale) Mackie, the daughter of Ernest and Mildred (Dewey) Bale, was born October 23, 1927, on a farm northwest of Ruthven, Iowa. She graduated from Ruthven High School and Hamilton Business College in Mason City, Iowa.
She married Stewart Mackie on April 9, 1947. Following their marriage, they went to Greenville, South Carolina, where Stew was playing ball for the Greenville Spinners (Brooklyn Dodgers Organization Class A). They spent winters in Spencer and summers in South Carolina until 1949 when they returned to Spencer and started Stew’s Standard for 23 years.
Margaret was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, where she taught Sunday school Kindergarten. She enjoyed playing bridge, bowling, golfing, having coffee with friends, and volunteering at Spencer Hospital. She started the Mini Donut business in 1988 which she enjoyed, but sold it when they moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1990 where they were winter visitors. She and Stew finally stayed year round as their oldest son, Larry, and family lived in Scottsdale.
She passed away on April 28, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers, Halsey and Keith (Gladys). She is survived by two sons, Larry (Kathy) of Sun City, Arizona, and Brad (Melinda) of Broomfield, Colorado, two daughters, Jackie Huckfelt (Jeff) of Spencer, Iowa, and Janet of Houston, Texas, 11 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
