Margaret Mae (Schlagel) Norris, best known as “Peg”, of Spencer, Iowa, passed away on November 10, 2022, at 90 years old. Peg was born on May 12, 1932, to Ray and Paulina Schlagel in Culbertson, Nebraska. After graduating from Culbertson High School she went on to study at Kearney State Teacher’s College (UNKearney). In 1950, while at school, Peg met Ken Norris. Sparks flew and they were married on May 20, 1951. Together they raised three daughters and one son.
After having children, Peg dedicated her life to motherhood and homemaking. Whether assisting Ken while building his real estate business or providing guidance to her kids through their various passions and life challenges, Peg was there with love and encouragement. Throughout her life, she was a positive influence to all who knew her.
An avid bridge player and golfer, Peg developed many cherished friendships built around these activities. Peg loved to play bridge! Tuesdays at the Club were a favorite, but any day of the week, just ask, she’d be there. Each year, Peg and her friends would hold a Christmas cookie exchange, where she shared her delicious caramel candies with friends and family. Taught by her mother, Peg perfected and passed down the recipe and skills necessary to make a Nebraska classic and family favorite – the runza!
In 1976, ancient mammoth bones were discovered while building their home on West 11th Street. The bones were later donated to the local historical society, and Ken and Peg have supported the Parker Museum and Clay County Heritage Center since. Additionally, Peg has been an active member of Grace United Methodist Church since moving to Spencer in 1955. Her faith in God was unshakable. She relied heavily on that faith, and spoke often of her trust in His plan for her life.
Peg was preceded in death by her parents, older sister, Mary Ellen Fluegeman, and her husband, Ken Norris. She is survived by her twin sister, Marge Perren; her children: Deb Norris, Sandy Norris Murray (Dick), Jenny Zalaznik (Kevin), Kyle Norris (Diedra); her grandchildren: Drew Hjelm (Rebecca), Andy Murray, Alex Murray, Katy Taylor (Grant) and five great grandchildren with one on the way.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Clay County Heritage Center, Grace United Methodist Church, or the American Legion Glen Pedersen Post No. 1 in Iowa.
