Margey Lavera Newel

Margey L. Newel, the daughter of Rudolph and Nettie (Carlson) Branstad, was born October 27, 1923, near Leland, Iowa. She attended school in Leland, graduating from Leland High School in 1941. Margey later graduated from Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, in 1943. She was a member of the choir, and also was in small vocal groups. From 1943 to 1944, she taught in the intermediate grades at Cooper, Iowa. From the fall of 1944 to 1947, she taught at Hartley, Iowa. On June 1, 1947, Margey married Franklin Newel of Hartley at Leland, Iowa. Throughout their married life, they made their home in Hartley until, 1962, when they moved to Spencer. They lived in Spencer until 1976, when they moved to Milford and returned to Spencer in 1985. Margey was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church while in Hartley and later Bethany Lutheran Church when they lived in Spencer. She was active in both churches in women's groups, choir, and taught Sunday school and Bible school. Margey was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She had been a resident of of St. Luke Lutheran Home since August of 2003. Margey passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at the age of 85. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Nita Mae and her husband, Franklin on June 13, 1989. Left to cherish her memory are two sisters: Ardis Helvick of Forest City, IA and Ruth Westerberg of Leland, IA; two brothers: Rollin Branstad of Decatur, IL and Dennis Branstad of Gaithersburg, MD; several nieces and nephews; several grand nieces and grand nephews; other relatives and friends.
