Marie Gladys Hess, the daughter of Harvey and Gladys (Kickland) Lanpher, was born October 5, 1923 in Sioux Falls, SD. Her childhood years were spent in Sioux Falls, where she received her education graduating from Washington High School in Sioux Falls. After high school, she continued her education for one year at a business school. After her schooling, Marie moved to Alemeda, CA and worked at the Alameda Naval Station during WWII repairing airplanes.
Marie married Milo “Mike” Hess on May 27, 1950 in Sioux Falls. After their marriage, they lived in Terril, Iowa where she continued to live all of the rest of her life. In Terril, she worked as a secretary to the high school Principal for 26 years until her retirement. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Terril. Marie was also actively involved in her community with the Federated Women’s Club, the Cemetery Association and the Library Board. She enjoyed reading and traveling in her spare time as well as fulfilling her lifetime love for cats.
She passed away at the Lakes Regional Hospital in Spirit Lake, Iowa on Sunday, April 1, 2018 at the age of 94. Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mike in 1978; four brothers and their spouses: Jim (Donna), Everett (Betty), Don and Bill Lanpher; one sister and her husband, Jean (Stanley) Nelson; two nieces: Rita Tornow and Renee Lanpher and one nephew, Everett Lanpher, Jr.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Robert of Terril; one brother, Robert and his wife, Evelyn Lanpher of Sioux Falls; two sister-in-law’s: Karen Lanpher of Chaska, MN and Alice Lanpher of Sioux Falls; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
