Marilyn Jane Jones, the daughter of Alfred and Leah (Krohn) Nielsen, was born on January 28, 1932, on a farm west of Webb, IA. She attended school at Cornell, Curlew and Sioux Rapids where she graduated in 1951. She was an outstanding athlete excelling at softball and basketball. After high school she graduated from the Commercial Extension School of Commerce in Omaha where she studied business and played basketball. She was employed at First State Bank in Sioux Rapids until starting her family.
On June 7, 1959, Marilyn was united in marriage to Wendell Hugh Jones in Sioux Rapids, IA. Following their marriage, they farmed the Jones family farm north of Linn Grove, IA raising cattle, hogs, sheep and chickens. In addition, she gathered eggs by hand every day from 5,600 layer hens for twenty-two years until her retirement. She always had a huge garden and did a lot of canning and freezing. We especially loved her beet jelly.
She was a member of the Royal United Methodist Church where she was treasurer for several years and a member of United Methodist Women. She was also a den mother for Cub Scouts and an election worker for many years. In her spare time, she enjoyed bowling, reading, fishing, watching her kids’ and grandkids’ activities, watching sports, live and on tv, she was a big fan of girls’ basketball, and she especially loved woodworking and spending time with her family.
Marilyn passed away on February 12, 2024 at Glen Oaks Care Center in Urbandale, IA at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wendell on May 8, 2015; her brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Maxine Nielsen; her infant sister, Eleanor Marie Nielsen; her brother-in-law, Bernard Jones; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Arla Gould.
Left to cherish her memory are her son Craig (Kathy) Jones of Storm Lake, IA; her daughter, Carol Jones (Jim White) of Waukee, IA; 2 grandsons: Ben Jones of Royal, IA and Noah White of Waukee, IA; step-grandsons, Grant Gasner of Storm Lake, IA and Ethan Gasner of Storm Lake, IA; her brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Marilyn Nielsen of Algona, IA; other relatives; and many friends.
