Marilyn Ruth Schimmer, the daughter of Phillip and Eleanor (Miles) Miller, was born January 24, 1935, in Storm Lake, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent on a farm north of Storm Lake. She attended K - 12th grade at Truesdale High School graduating in 1952. Marilyn continued her education at Buena Vista University where she received her teaching degree in 1954. After her schooling she taught in Linn Grove, Iowa, for two years, then in Sutherland, Iowa for two years where she met her future husband.
Marilyn married John 'Duane' Schimmer on February 16, 1957, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. After their marriage, they farmed northeast of Sutherland where they raised their four daughters.
In 1970 Marilyn opened ABC Preschool. She was Mrs. Schimmer to many young children for 24 years from many area towns.
In 1994 she began working as a Home Health Aide. For ten years she enjoyed her clients and came to love them like family.
Marilyn thoroughly enjoyed spending the summer with Duane at their cabin on West Okoboji. She was a volunteer at Lakes Regional Healthcare, and she and Duane volunteered at the Dickinson County Nature Center.
In 2002 Duane and Marilyn began wintering in Mesa, Arizona. They met and befriended many wonderful people over those years, and got a chance to visit much of the surrounding area.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sutherland and of St. Ann's Guild.
Marilyn was an avid reader. She loved nature, especially birds, antiques, thrift shops and was quite the Scrabble player.
Marilyn passed away at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake, Iowa, on Friday, June 24, 2016, at the age of 81. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ed; brothers-in-law: Dick Kestel, Gordon Burns, and Tom Rollis; and sister-in-law, Sondra Miller.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Duane of Sutherland, IA; her children: Teresa (Steve) Carnahan of Sutherland, IA, Peggy Schimmer of Spencer, IA, Lynn Schimmer of Sheldon, IA, and Sue (Jamie) Christofferson of Spencer, IA; three grandchildren: Chris Carnahan, Robin (Brad) Lambertus and Andrew Christofferson; three brothers: Robert Miller of Garden City, KS, Jim (Joy) Miller of Minneapolis, MN, and Tim (Sal) Miller of Cedar Rapids, IA; four sisters: Jodi Burns of Urbandale, IA, Jean Kestel of Ames, IA; Nancy Greaves of Fairfax, VA, and Judy (Jim) Twohig of Jackson, NE; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sutherland.

Visitation will begin 3:00 P.M., Monday, June 27th with the family present from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M., Monday at the SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH in Sutherland.
A Catholic Vigil service will be held at 5:00 P.M., Monday at the church.
