Marjorie Cornwall, Urbandale, Iowa, formerly of Spencer, Iowa
Marjorie Warner Cornwall, 85, was born October 5, 1929, in Minneapolis, Mn to Milton and Ethel Lund Warner. She passed away on Feb, 6, 2015 after a brief stay at Mercy Hospice House in Johnston, Iowa, surrounded by the love of many of her family members.
Marjorie attended early school in Mankato, Mn. and graduated from Spencer High School in Spencer, Iowa in 1947. Following high school she attended MacMurray College for Women in Illinois and graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul , Mn. with a degree in education. She taught kindergarten in Great Falls, Montana before returning to Spencer to marry Tom Wendell Cornwall on June 10, 1951.
While in Spencer, Marjorie was involved in PTA, YMCA board, First Congregational Church committees and Chapter KF of the PEO Sisterhood. She was the activity coordinator at Longhouse Nursing Home from 1970-1980. While working at Longhouse, she was active in local, state, and national activity coordinator associations. She served as regional coordinator on the national AHCA Activity Coordinators Committee in Washington, DC. She also taught certification classes for the State Health Dept of Iowa. Marjorie had a passion for promoting literacy and earned the individual Governor's Award in 1988 for her work.
Beginning in 1981, she and Tom spent many winters in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama . In 2005, Marjorie and Tom moved to the Deerfield Lifespace Community in Urbandale, Iowa where she continued her love of volunteering. She and Tom attended the Waukee United Methodist Church and the Plymouth Congregational Church while in Urbandale.
She is preceded in death by her husband Tom, her parents, her sister Mary Redmond Watson, and many other relatives.
She is survived by her children Tom Cornwall (Betsy), Edmonton, Canada, Katie Rohling (Kevin) St. Cloud, Mn. and Mary Halquist (Kent), (Magnolia, Tx) ten grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren , a seventh due in April, and 4 nieces and 1 nephew.
A celebration of life will be held in late spring or early summer at Deerfield Lifespace Community , with burial in Spencer, Iowa. Warner Funeral Home in Spencer, Iowa will be in charge of arrangements, and online tributes and condolences may be made to www.warnerfuneralhome.com.
Memorials may be made to the Mercy Hospice House at 5820 Winwood Drive, Johnston, Iowa , 50130, or to the Warner Dialysis Center or the Ruth Cornwall Scholarship Fund at the Spencer Municipal Hospital.
