Marty Ray Matthiesen

December 4, 1956 — August 14, 2014

Marty Ray Matthiesen, the son of Jack and Betty (Averill) Matthiesen, was born December 4, 1956, in Spencer, Iowa. Marty received his education from Spencer schools, graduating in 1975. As a child and through his young adult years, Marty enjoyed riding and working with horses with his family on their acreage near Fostoria. He married Cathy Miller on July 11, 1975 at the Lutheran church in Spencer. Soon after, Marty made his first journey to Montana. That trip set in motion a love of the mountains and a life of travel and adventure that would endure the remainder of his life. Marty spent the next several years traveling the country and working various jobs. He would return to Spencer occasionally for his 'family fix', and off he would go on to the next chapter. Marty led a big life. He returned to Spencer late in 2008 when he felt the need to get back to his roots and spend time with his family. Marty was employed at Carey's Electronics as an installer, and most recently, he was the horse and barn manager for Dr. Gordy in Spencer. Marty passed away at his home on August 14, 2014, at the age of 57. He is preceded in death by his father in 1996; and brother, Jerry in 2008. Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Betty of Spencer, IA; sister, Becky Matthiesen of Charles City, IA; brother, Rod Matthiesen of Rogers, MN; 3 nieces: Bree, Brook and Brandie; and 5 great-nieces and nephews: Skylar, Josh, Kylee, and twins, Jack and Donald; other friends and relatives.
