Mary Gladys Schmidt

     Mary Gladys Schmidt, the daughter of Reinder and Folena (Wiemers) Sonius, was born on November 2, 1924 in Spencer, IA. She was raised and received her early education in Spencer, graduating from Spencer High School in 1942. Following graduation, she moved to Denver, CO for a few years before returning to Spencer and going to work for Tom Thomas, Inc. as a bookkeeper.

     On February 20, 1956, she married Dale Schmidt in Lemars, IA. The couple lived in Spencer and built the house they lived in. Mary stayed home to raise her family until the kids went to school. She then returned to Tom Thomas, Inc.

     Mary was an active member of Zion United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School and was the Treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the Women’s Federated Club. Mary enjoyed making crafts and quilting. She loved spending time with her grandkids and was a great mother and neighbor and enjoyed having coffee with neighborhood ladies. She also liked to read and do word search puzzles.

     She passed away on December 1, 2023, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, at the age of 99. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale; her brother, Henry Sonius; her sister, Bertha Mae Sonius and her son-in-law, Jay Hermstad.

     Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Carol Hermstad of Sioux Rapids, IA; her son, Steven Schmidt and his wife, Renee of Gardner, KS; her grandsons: Greg Hermstad and his wife, Carly and their two children: Hannah and Hunter all of Webb, IA and David Hermstad and his wife, Suzanne of Webb, IA; her sister, Anna Gibson of Spencer, IA; other relatives and friends.
