Matthew Alan Murray, Son of Denise (Dean) Murray and Ian Murray of Mesa, Arizona was born August 25, 1982, in Spencer, Iowa. He attended developmental preschool in Spencer, before moving to Mesa, Arizona in 1986. He attended schools in Mesa and graduated from Mt. View High School, in 2002.
Cub Scouts and then Boy Scouts were regular activities for Matthew as he grew up. He participated with many camping trips and helping with fellow Scouts’ Eagle Projects. Matthew became an Eagle Scout when he was 17.
Matthew’s favorite hobby when he was a child was fishing. He spent time fishing in Iowa while there and when visiting his Grandparents. In Arizona, he did more than his fair share of fishing with his family. As he got older, Matthew was befriended by many other fishermen who took him under their wings to fish with and to participate in Bass fishing tournaments. He loved it and they loved him!
Matthew worked as a courtesy clerk for a number of years at Fry’s grocery store on Stapley & McKellips in Mesa.
Throughout his school days and adult years he was an active church participant at several different churches. Matthew had an open heart to all persons regardless of their faith, age, race, or disabilities. He would be the first to line up to help others—without thinking of his needs. Compassion Church is where Matthew was able to attend church in his latter years with his parents and his brother’s family. As Matt’s illness progressed, friends from all the churches that Matthew had associated with, offered up prayers for him and the family.
Matthew passed away on Sunday, May 9, 2021, at St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center at the age of 38, with his parents at his side. He was able to honor his mother’s last wish—to remain with her for Mother’s Day.
His last 3 years had been made difficult related to neurological changes due to a nonspecific Mitochondrial Disease.
Matthew is preceded in death by his grandfather, Ivan Murray.
