Maude Ellen Erickson, the daughter of Ralph and Cora Petrich, was born September 20, 1915 in Sanborn, IA. She grew up on a farm near Sanborn with her older brother Lloyd and younger brother Leland. She attended country school, was recognized for scholarship and citizenship, and graduated in 1933. After graduation, she attended the Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley from 1933 to 1935 graduating with a teaching certificate. She returned to Iowa teaching school in Osceola and O'Brien counties for nine years. Then, she was assistant superintendent of schools in Primghar, IA.
IN 1944, Maude traveled to Cheyenne, WY and lived there working for the International Harvester Company as an office manager in the dealer relations department. In October of 1945, a handsome man of 36 walked into her office in his service uniform. He had been honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and was inquiring whether he could work again at the plant as he had before enlisting. Maude assured him that he could, and asked her if she would care to have dinner.
Maude Ellen married Alf Harold Erickson on October 25, 1947 in Scottsbluff, NE where Mr. Erickson had taken a job with International Harvester dealership. Maude and Alf lived in Scottsbluff, and Alf's son, Jon Erickson joined them for his high school years. After Jon received a scholarship to play football at the University of Wyoming in 1952, the Erickson's moved to Spencer, IA. Mr. Erickson was the office manager at the Ford dealership and Mrs. Erickson was an active homemaker. Living in Spencer 47 years, Mrs. Erickson was active in the Republican Party, PTA, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and Grace United Methodist Church, where she taught Christian Education to children and adults.
In 1999, eight years after the passing of her husband, Alf, Mrs. Erickson moved from Spencer to Apple Valley, MN to be near her grandchildren.
