Maurice Dean Coover, the son of Morrell and Florence (Arms) Coover was born April 5, 1936, in Spencer, IA. His childhood years were spent in the Gillette Grove area where he attended school, graduating from Gillette Grove High School in 1953.
Maurice married Myra Spears on May 18, 1957, in Greenville, IA. He enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1957 and did six months of active duty before being Honorably Discharged in 1965. He worked for Spencer Construction for 30 years as Shop Foreman. He became a co-owner of Clay Contractors from 1986 to 2002, retiring in 2003. His company built several structures in northwest Iowa, including the Spencer Hospital additions, Simonsens, Hartley School addition, Spencer School additions, Highlands, Hartley Community Center, YMCA additions, Rural Water facilities, and many more.
Maurice enjoyed hunting, gardening, his workshop and was an avid conservationist. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He was a member of the Congregational Church of Greenville and a board member for over 50 years, serving many years as chairman. He was often called on for guidance and repairs of the church property. He was a master in small bore rifle marksmanship and a lifetime member of the NRA.
Maurice passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2015, at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD, at the age of 79. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Myra of Spencer, IA; 3 children, Jay (Shayna) Coover of Kenmore, WA, Cris (Ianthe) Coover of Dickens, IA, and Leslee Coover of Brookings, SD; 7 grandchildren; one sister, Mary Storley of Spencer, IA; his dog and best friend, Nick; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will take place 10:30 A.M., Monday, May 11, at the First Congregational Church in Spencer.
