Mavis Genevieve Marxen

December 12, 1926 — January 25, 2014

Mavis Genevieve Marxen, the daughter of Arthur E. and Marcia S. (Coddington) Johnson was born December 12, 1926, in Marathon, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Marathon where she attended grade school. Her family moved to Laurens in 1940 where she started high school, later moving to Webb where she graduated from Garfield-Webb High School in 1944. Following graduation, she was employed at Clay County Ration Board during World War II. On October 24, 1953, Mavis married Darold 'Dutch' Marxen at the Methodist Parsonage in Jackson, Minnesota. The early years of their marriage were spent in Spencer, Iowa. In 1976, they moved to Spirit Lake where they lived until their retirement years, and then returned to Spencer in 1985 where they made their home ever since. Mavis was employed as a bookkeeper for Jersey Dairy for 12 years, and Chuck Whittenburg Distributors for 30 years. Mavis was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer, where she was very active in the church. She enjoyed volunteering for various organizations, and spending time at the Spencer Community Theatre and Spencer Senior Center. Mavis passed away at the Spencer Hospital on January 25, 2014, at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dutch, on August 8, 1996; and one brother, Dale Johnson. Mavis is survived by her cousins and many friends.
SERVICES
Memorial Services will be 11:00 A.M., Thursday, January 30, 2014, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer. In lieu of flowers memorial may be directed to the American Cancer Society
