Mavis Helen Olin, the daughter of Julius and Olga Matilda (Larson) Jenson, was born January 27, 1918, in Britt, Iowa. She graduated from Crystal Lake High School in 1935, and later attended UNI as an Education Major as well as a Basketball and Field Hockey athlete. After graduating from UNI, she accepted a teaching position in Royal. During her 5 year tenure, she met Jerry Olin.
Mavis and Jerry were married in Brooklyn, NY on August 11, 1942. Upon Jerry's Service Deployment overseas, Mavis returned to Iowa and resumed teaching at Titonka and Tripoli. Mavis and Jerry moved to Spencer in 1946 following his discharge and Mavis began teaching at Lincoln School. In 1947, Mavis and Jerry opened Olin's Market. During the next 25 years, she continued her career as a devoted teacher in the Spencer schools and taught GED for Iowa Lakes. In addition, she shared responsibility for all aspects of the business and raised her family. Mavis was a life member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.
Mavis passed away at the St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer on Monday, December 29, 2014, at the age of 96.
She is survived by three daughters: Pam (Miles) Norris of Troutdale, OR, Patricia (Eduardo) Rodea of Highland Beach, FL, Peggy (Michael) Moland of Minneapolis, MN; six grandchildren; one great- grandchild: Patrick and Blake Norris, Pilar & Nathan (Joann) Rehert, Brigitte Moland & Abigail Moland (John Walker) & Callum Walker; other relatives and many friends. She was a true ambassador for Lake Okoboji, the Iowa Hawkeyes, her love for teaching and having fun. However, her greatest love of all was her family...
