Max Van Buren

August 18, 1933 — July 23, 2015

Max Lee Van Buren, the son of Vern and Loretta (Spencer) Van Buren, was born August 18, 1933 in Pawnee City, NE. His childhood years were spent in Pawnee and his family later moved to Spencer, Iowa when Max was a young child. He continued his education at Spencer schools, graduating from Spencer High School in 1951. He attended Westmar College and later Wayne State College on a football scholarship. Max was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953 and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge in 1955. He returned to Spencer following his service and began working for Spencer Foods. Max met and married Doris Conner on June 21, 1959 at the First Christian Church in Spencer. After Spencer Foods closed, he began his career with Eaton Corporation, where he worked as a Light Duty Assembly Technician until his retirement in September of 1995. Max was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed playing golf and playing cards (Pinochle) at the VFW hall. He loved going on the Farmer's Bank fishing trips and worked as the east gate keeper for the Clay County Fair for the last 20 years. Max passed away at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, Iowa on Thursday, July 23, 2015 at the age of 81. He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Bob & Sally Conner; his twin brother, Paul and his brother, James. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Doris of Spencer; his daughter, Vickie and her husband, Jim Montgomery of Spencer; one son, Alan and his wife, Sara Van Buren of Spencer; one granddaughter, Sara (Kara) Montgomery Porter of Carpentersville, IL; one great granddaughter, Opal Montgomery Porter; other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 25, at 2:00 p.m. at First Congregational Church in Spencer, IA. A military flag presentation will be held at the church by the VFW.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Riverside Cemetery Spencer, Iowa In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established by the family.
