Maxine Elizabeth Thompson

Maxine Elizabeth Thompson, daughter of Pete and Esther (Goedicke)Wiedenkamp was born on September 5, 1922 in Spencer, Iowa. She attended Riverton District One and graduated from Spencer High School with honors in 1940. Following graduation, she attended A.I.B. Secretarial School, returning to serve at the Clay County Courthouse's Welfare Office. Maxine was the first Woman from Clay County to enlist in the United States Navy WAVES. She was assigned to the Office of Naval Intelligence. She was honorably discharged by the Navy Department in Bainbridge, MD after serving 2 years, 6 months and 5 days. Lyle Earnest Thompson and Maxine were married in Washington, D.C. on July 15, 1944. Being wartime, they could only spend 16 days together over the 4 years of their service. Upon return to Spencer, she was appointed the Executive Secretary to the newly created office for "Soldier's Relief" now known as Veteran's Affairs. After taking time to raise a family, she returned to the workforce as a bookkeeper for Hy-Line International for 19 years. After retiring, she and Lyle enjoyed collaborating on wooden craft projects they sold at local craft fairs. Maxine was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 3159, WAVES North Iowa Lakes unit 110, served as Adjutant to American Legion Glen Pederson Post No. 1 for 18 years, and held 9th district Legion Offices on 2 separate occasions. She also served on the Planning Board of Directors for the Spencer Veterans Memorial. Maxine was a lifetime member of First English Lutheran Church, and served with the Esther Guild. She loved traveling and camping with the Square Dance Campers 037. When her daughters were young, she assisted with Girl Scouts and 4H. Maxine passed away on June 29, 2015. She was preceded in death by her mother Esther Wiedenkamp; her father Pete Wiedenkamp and step-mother Vi Wiedenkamp; and her husband of 56 years Lyle Thompson. She is survived by her daughter Lori and her husband Dr. Brian Anliker; daughter Sue and her husband Andy Averill; grandson Ryan and his wife Toni Schmidt; granddaughter Meredith and her husband Keith Seivert , great-grandson Kinnick , and a soon-to-be born second great-grandson; step-granddaughter Ashlee and her husband Kevin Boothby; sister-in-law Ellie and her husband Bob Finnegan. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, July 2, 2015 at First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.
