Melvin Ray Degroot

Melvin Ray DeGroot passed February 4th, 2017 in the outdoors, where he loved to spend his time. Mel was born on June 9, 1953, to George and Florence (Smeins) DeGroot of Luverne, MN. He graduated high school in 1971 and Morningside College in 1974 with a Bachelor's degree in elementary education and library science. Mel started his teaching career in the Anthon-Oto School District and continued to spread his enthusiasm for learning in various spots most recently at Graettinger-Terril Community School District in Northwest Iowa teaching math and science in the middle school for over 15 years. Hunting has always been one of Mel's greatest passions. He started at a young age with his older brothers and was buoyed later in life by some of his most loyal companions, his hunting dogs. They could generally be found trolling the wetlands or plowed corn fields during various bird seasons in the early mornings or evenings; or otherwise honing their skills around the soccer and baseball practice fields during the off-season. Mel will always be remembered for his positive attitude, being quick with a joke and always trying to make everyone's day a little better. He is preceded in death by his parents George and Florence and older brothers, George (Bud) and Larry. He is survived by his children, Megan - Wichita, KS; Nicki - Minneapolis, MN; and Jud (Grace) - Wichita, KS; sister Vickie (Mike) Sorn - Cambridge, MN; former wife, Dorothy and dogs Rocky and Gus.
