Meredith James Johnston, the son of Charles Elmer and Ethel Wilma (McKee) Johnston, was born on February 13, 1942, in Centerville, IA. His early years were spent in Woodland, IA, and attended and graduated from Mormon Trail High School in Garden Grove, IA. Following high school, he attended Norwest Missouri State and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology and then attended Central Michigan and earned a Master’s degree in Health Care Management. After college, he was drafted into the Army in May of 1967 and served in Germany and Vietnam. In march of 1969 he was honorably discharged. Following, his military service, he took a job at a private laboratory in Des Moines, before moving to Spencer in 1971. He worked at the Spencer Hospital as a staff technologist for one year before becoming the Laboratory Supervisor. He retired in 2004.
On September 3, 1966, Meredith married Linda Launspach in Nemaha, IA. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Spencer where they raised their family. Meredith was very active in the State Medical Society and also served as President and was in charge of some of their conventions. He enjoyed doing his hobbies in retirement, working with stained glass, picture frames and matting. Meredith was very involved in various Railroad Organizations. He enjoyed being a conductor on the train at Iowa Hawkeye games, where he brought people to the stadium from the parking lots.
Meredith passed away on November 5, 2024 at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 82. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Linda of Spencer, IA; his two sons: Mark Johnston and his wife, Debra of St. Paul, MN and Steven Johnston and his wife, Jennifer of Meridian, ID; two granddaughters: Alexia and McKenna; other relatives and friends.
