Merlyn Louis Wegener

Merlyn Louis Wegener, the son of Robert John and Ottilia Baas Wegener, was born August 12, 1920 in Whittemore, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Whittemore, where he received his education at St. Paul Parochial School and later Concordia High School in St. Paul, MN, graduating in 1940. He entered the military and served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII from June 1942, until his honorable discharge in October of 1945. While in the Air Corps, he was a military policeman. Merlyn married Loretta Yerex on October 29, 1945 in Lamont, Alberta, Canada. Following their marriage, they returned to Whittemore, where he worked at a grocery store and a creamery in Whittemore. They moved to Spencer in 1956 where he worked at Northwest Ice Cream and later Jersey Dairy for many years. He went to work for the U.S. Post Office, where he worked for 23 years, until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW Clay County Post #3152 of Spencer. He was also a member and served as Chaplain of Glen Pedersen Post #1 of the American Legion of Spencer. Merlyn also conducted military funeral services for many veterans', which he did with dignity and honor. He spent many winter months in Texas and he also enjoyed traveling and had gone to Australia. Merlyn also liked to fish and loved to read. Merlyn passed away at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD on Saturday, August 26, 2006 at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Wegener. He is survived by his wife, Loretta of Spencer; one daughter, LuAnn and her husband, Tim Thomsen of Spencer; two sons: Blair and his wife, Davonne Wegener of Edgerton, MN and Douglas and his wife, Katie Wegener of Melbourne, Australia; 8 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; his siblings: Margie Bensen of Morris, MN, Norman Wegener of Forest City, IA, Ruth Matheson and her husband, Dick of Nora Springs, IA, David and his wife, Colleen Wegener of Largo, FL, Dale and his wife, Lois Wegener of Emmetsburg, IA and Lyndon and his wife, Mary Wegener of California; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Memorial Services will be held 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer.

VISITATION
A Public gathering will be held from 6 to 8:00 P.M., Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Spencer.
INTERMENT
Burial will be at North Lawn Memorial Park in Spencer at 3:30 P.M., Tuesday following a time of fellowship at the church. Military Services will be conducted by Glen Pedersen Post #1 of the American Legion in Spencer. Memorials may be directed to Bethany Lutheran Church or the Minnesota Veteran's Home of Luverne, MN.
