Michael Fischer

Michael Robert Fischer, the son of Oscar and Sarah Pauline (Pomerantz) Fischer, was born July 14, 1951, in Danville, IL. His family moved to Coral Gables, FL, when Mike was a child where he received his early education. Mike attended Miami-Dade College for two years and then moved to Iowa City, IA, where he received his BA degree from the University of Iowa. After his schooling, he worked as a commercial sales representative for Polaroid Corporation in St. Louis, MO. Mike married Barbara Nielsen on April 16, 1978, in Spencer, IA. Following their marriage, they lived in St. Louis until moving to Spencer in 1979. Upon his arrival in Spencer, Mike began working at Nielsen Tire & Appliance Company, where he would eventually be president. One of his greatest passions was photography; he touched a lot of lives with his photographs. No photographer in Iowa has won more first place awards from the Iowa Newspaper Association than Mike. As part of his service to the retail community, he had also served as president of the National Association of Retailer Dealers of America (NARDA). Mike passed away in Minnetonka, MN, on Monday, January 6, 2014 at the age of 62. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Mindy Levine. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Barbara of Spencer; one daughter, Sarah Fischer and husband, Timothy, of Washington, DC; one son, Donovan 'D.J.' Fischer of Spencer; two brothers: Victor and David Fischer; other relatives and many, many friends. Mike's family invites all those in attendance to join them for refreshments and time of fellowship in the fellowship hall of the First Congregational Church immediately following the funeral services.
