Michael Kunath

October 9, 1948 — September 21, 2015

Michael Sumner Kunath was born in Spencer, Iowa on October 9, 1948 to Kay and Bonnie (Sorenson) Kunath. He spent his first 10 years on a farm near Dickens, IA where his parents farmed for his grandfather. This is where he developed his interest in mechanical devices. Mike spent many hours as a child building 'engines' from old farm machinery. When he was ten he was allowed to drive one of the small Ford Tractors around the farm to herd the Dairy cows home. In 1958 Mike's parents moved into their new home in Spencer where he attended Spencer Schools. Mike graduated from Spencer High School in 1968. He then went to Des Moines to attend Lincoln Technical Institute studying automotive repair with intentions to join his father, Kay in his business. In 1969 Mike enlisted in the U.S. Navy and because of his previous training received additional training for work in the 'CB's'. His tour of duty which spanned four years took him first to Adak, Alaska for a year, to Cam Rahn Bay and other parts of Vietnam for two years and then to San Diego, CA naval base for a year prior to his discharge. Upon his return to Spencer, he attended Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg taking additional courses in auto mechanics and parts supply and management. Following his graduation from Iowa Lakes Community College he worked for Sieg Company and did small engine repair. Mike eventually joined his father in business at Bangs Bee Line adding automotive repair and tune-ups to the services available. Eventually Mike took over the business from his father upon his retirement and he remained in that business until his own retirement in 2012. Mike enjoyed the various older cars he owned and restored, taking long trips on his motorcycle, and quality time with his family and friends. Mike was a member of the Vietnam Veterans group, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and St. Stephens Episcopal Church. Mike passed away Monday, September 21, 2015 at Avera McKenna Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD from long term health issues. He was preceded in death by his father, Kay Kunath in 2014 and his brother, Gary Patrick in 1997. He is survived by his son, Michael and wife, Alicia of Spencer, his mother, Bonnie of Spencer, his brother, Jim of Waukee, IA, and his uncle, Lane of Spencer. He enjoyed his four grandchildren Kaylie, Jaydon, McKenzie, and Austin and the many hours spent with them, six nephews and nieces Sara, Eric, Joshua, Lauren, Alyssa, and Kelsey. Memorials can be made to St Alban's Church of Spirit Lake or the American Heart Association.
