Mildred Loretta Swanson, the daughter of Christian and Martha Hjelm Toft, was born August 13, 1918 in rural Royal, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in the Royal area and she received her early education in Royal country school and graduated. Following her graduation, Mildred attended Beauty School in Omaha.
On February 2, 1941, Mildred married Myron 'Turp' Swanson in Royal. They farmed in the Royal area for 20 years before moving to town in 1965. For several years, Turp and Mildred owned and operated the Prime Rib in Royal where Mildred was known for the salads she had made. Mildred was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal. In her spare time, Mildred enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. She also found great enjoyment in caring for others and sending the perfect cards on special occasions. Mildred's greatest love was her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mildred passed away on August 18, 2012, at the Ruthven Care Center at the age of 94. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Turp on January 6, 1994; her daughter, Karen; sister, Marion Dumkrieger, her brother, Ralph Toft, brother-in-law, Duane Swanson and sister-in-law, Leola Toft
Mildred is survived by her son and his wife, Allen and Linda Swanson of Royal; her son-in-law, Mike Cusack of Minneapolis, MN; one grandson & his wife, Chris & Lisa Swanson; one granddaughter & her husband, Pamela and Tom Hanson; 7 grandchildren: Brandon, Allie, Collin and Kal Swanson, Austin, Cassidy and Jake Hanson; her sister-in-law, Fern Toft of Okoboji, IA; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal.
